What i'm currently drinking
The wine i'm featuring this week is a white wine from Campania, Italy. Yes I am featuring another "strange" white European Grape that most people would probably not buy. But guyyssss it's delicious, so head on over to the vintages section and try this sucker out!
I learned about Falanghina when I studied my Italian Wine Scholar certification. Most people don't even know what the grape is or where it comes from. I personally was not really familiar with the wines of Campania before I started the course. It is only now that we are seeing the wines that have been made for centuries in the LCBO.
Let me give you a quick run down of Campania. it's located on the West side of Italy, right on the sea. It is most well know for it's main city Napoli, which is where pizza originated and also for Pompei and Mount Vesuvio. The wines of Campania are ancient, going back to Greek, Etruscan and Roman times.
They have a long growing history of farming native varietals and have many different growing terroir's. Leonardo Mustilli is know for recovering the Falanghina grape and bringing back development to the Sannio wine district. The new producers of Campania are focusing on the native grapes and bringing them back the recognition they have had in the past
So back to the grape I was talking about before...Falaghina is the most planted white variety of the region and one of the most ancient grapes as well. it is grown all over Campania and used as a single varietal or as a blend.
Falanghina has delicate floral aromas with notes of honey and chamomile. You can smell the apple and pear right off the bat. On the palate the wine in rich and has great acidity. it is perfect for a hot day and to serve along mild cheeses. Obviously because Campania is on the sea, it would be perfect with fish as well or even crispy pork!
Terre Stregate Svelto Falanghina is from Sannio. the subregion in the north of the province that borders Molise and Puglia. It is a 2016, so it has a bit of age, but typically wines from this varietal are not focused on age and rather on the freshness of the wine.
Enjoy the wine chilled and let the aromas of the wine take you to an ancient place of the world
