Leg 3 of our Journey accross the country
We woke up in our motel room in Regina to the sound of rain. I for one wasn't happy about it, because it was going to be my first day behind the wheel. We ate our sad motel buffet breakfast and packed some snacks for the road.
As I sat in the drivers seat, I thought about all the kilometers we had already covered. I can't remember much about our surroundings when we were driving this part of the drive. I do remember it being very flat and still very much in farm country. We had planned to find one of those old grain elevator's to take a picture of. I did have a great picture, but it got lost on my other phone that broke during our drive. More stress!
The drive out of Regina and through the rest of Saskatchewan was pretty straight and easy, plus the sky even cleared up and we had a little patch of sun. We had switched drivers just before the Middle of Canada. I looked for the marker on the map and we had just missed it, so we pulled over to the side and made a quick U turn to go check it out. There you can take a picture by the sign and sit in a large Adirondack or Muskoka chair.
We encountered a couple driving all the way to PEI from Vancouver. I thought in the back of my head, that would be one hell of a drive!
We sped off back onto the highway, driving into Winnipeg. Nick had said he was feeling unwell when we left in the morning and that got worse the more we drove on.
The city of Winnipeg kind of reminded me of what Hamilton or Guelph look like. Older buildings that are 2-3 stories as you drive downtown into where the high rises are. We stayed downtown, so we decided to park the car and get out after another long day of driving.
Luckily the Delta had a nice outdoor pool, so I decided to go while Nick said he would relax in the bar downstairs. I had been swimming and taking a few pictures. The sun was pretty high and I must have left my phone out when I went into the pool, because it wouldn't turn on when I got out. A fried phone on a trip accross the country, great. Now what?
I would be lying if I said I didn't panic. Nothing was happening. Absolutely dead. All your stuff on your phone...gone. At least I had a computer to send emails from.
I had to find Nick downstairs to get him to walk with me to a phone store so I could see about it getting fixed. When I got there, the man asked me if I would leave it there for a week and I told him I had to leave tomorrow. I had planned to meet a friend in the city, but with no phone and no way for me to know his number, I had no way of communicating with him.
So with one phone and nowhere to go meet my friend, we ventured off to The Forks to grab something to eat and drink. The Forks is an covered and open air market where you can grab food and drinks and sit by the river. The kind of place you could really be into after a stressful day.
I got some tacos and a beer and wondered if my friend would have got the messages we sent to him without having a phone number. The park is beautiful and has a wonderful long trail that lines the river. It features a great view of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. I didn't get a chance to go, but next time I would love to stop in.
After this adventure and walking with a person who didn't feel well, it was time to go to bed again. Another sleep in a different hotel bed, so we can be off in the morning again. Winnipeg looked like a cool city with some nice views, but I would have to wait for another time to check it out again.
Next week's episode, gets into Ontario and the views of the north. On to Thunder Bay.
