Where have I been you ask?

I haven't forgot about you lovelies! Between travelling to a few places in September and the start of this month and moving into a new position in my job, i've been a busy girl. I am sorry i've been neglecting you, but it was for good reason.

I'm happy to say that I have been away, but your girl is back again to throw you some good info about what is happening this fall in my world

The seasons have changed and the leaves are rustling on the ground. Most things have been picked from the fields and the wine of this vintage has been pressed and rests in the bottles for next year. It's time to layer all of your scarves, put on your lovely fall wardrobe and kick back and enjoy taking it easy

As I write this, I am currently enjoying a tea in the fall sunshine outside and I am loving it. I'm not sweaty, but comfortable and relaxed. I'm not fully sure the reason for why we as Canadians love fall so much, but I personally have a few reasons. Sooooo I've decided to write a little list of why I love fall and why you should to.

farmers market, vegetables
fresh produce at the Atwater market in Montreal

Cooking low and slow

When fall hits, it's time for soups, braises and stews. Yes this type of food requires patience and time, but the results are beautiful. This type of food truly is a part of our homes and hearts and usually when we eat is we feel good inside. These dishes are also great things to make in big batches, so they can feed many people or last a number of days after you make them.

Harvest produce

Things like squash, apples, root vegetables are everywhere and taste the best at this time of year. There are so many things you can do with these wonderful ingredients. I would suggest going out to one of the markets I mentioned on my insta page and check out what the farmers are bring back to the city

red wine, wine
enjoying some Rioja at Dominion Square Tavern

Big, bold and beautiful red wine

With the end of summer and chilled wines, the new season brings warm heavy and bold reds to sip on the couch or by the fireplace. With the changes in food styles comes changes in what you should think about pairing it with. Heavier and heartier styles of food go well with heavier styles of wine. Don't be afraid of tannin or of fruit, just think about what you're going to be eating with the wine and then decide on the country and grape.

*my favourite red varietals of the moment are Aglianico, Primitivo and Gamay Noir

beer pub

Fall Saisons and dark beer

A new season brings new beers and there are some great new beers of the season that are starting to show themselves in breweries and a the LCBO. Bold and interesting beers are everywhere, so head over to your nearest microbrewery and grab a few different styles you normally wouldn't be interested in drinking. Better yet, go to a brew pub and get yourself an flight and see what the new flavours of the season are.

*tonight I'm going to Cask Days, one of the biggest craft brewer festivals in the province, so i'll be sure to let you guys know about what to look out for next time you want a crispy cold one

Hikes to see the colour changes

Yes it's a basic fall activity, but why do you think people love it so much? Because it's actually so lovely! Maybe you go check out a park in your area or drive to another part of the province. Start your day off with a hike and some fresh air and you will enjoy any of the above activities even more!

Well it looks like there are a few cool things that we all are going to do this season. I would love to hear back from you guys about what you love to cook and do during the fall season. Keep in touch and stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks! layer up and drink up!

until next time...
